After losing a significant amount of weight, does your loose or saggy skin hang in all the wrong places? If so you may benefit from post weight loss makeover surgery. This type of surgery for men who have lost weight is known as Body Contouring surgery. It often involves skin reduction, liposuction, skin tightening procedures such as a tummy tuck, male breast reduction, belt lipectomy or body lift. These procedures are often completed sequentially (individually); although some procedures may occasionally be combined in a single surgery session. However, it is usually not recommended to have too many procedures performed at once, so your surgery is likely to be done in stages.
Are you lacking in Body Confidence even though you lost a lot of weight – and is it related to having excess skin?
Two of our Team’s top Plastic Surgeons have dedicated their practices to post weight loss body contouring for men (Dr Geoff Barnett and Dr Richard Maxwell); and Dr Tom Robbins and Dr Douglas McManamny are also Body Contouring Surgeons for men in Melbourne.
You may be considering body contouring surgery if you have the following concerns:
- Loose sagging skin
- Recurring skin infections
- Chaffing due to skin folds
- Feeling ‘off balance’ during exercise
- Uncomfortable wearing revealing clothing or swimming
- Self-conscious about the excess, drooping skin
- Prone to unpleasant body odour due to moisture trapped in the skin folds
- Other discomforts including fear of intimacy due to current body contours
- Cannot see your natural body curves or shape due to excess skin
- Difficulty finding clothing that flatters you (e.g., wearing baggy clothing even though you’ve lost weight)
Has this caused you to:
- Feel embarrassed by your post-weight change baggy skin appearance?
- Not think of yourself as physically attractive or sexy?
- Be fearful of physical intimacy or feel lacking in body confidence?
- Not want to be seen in gym clothing or swimming gear?
- Avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless clothing?
If you have excessive drooping skin or skin folds, it is likely you may need more than just a standard Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck — you may need a series of body lift surgeries to get the life-changing contours that can help change yourlife and improve your post-weight loss body confidence.

Body Contouring Surgery for Extreme Weight Loss and Post-Bariatric Surgery Patients
Congratulations – you’ve lost a lot of weight and are likely feeling far more energetic.
Losing significant kilos is a significant endeavour and major accomplishment.
Major weight loss can significantly change your life and improve your chances for longevity.
But it may have left you with one sizeable problem: lots of saggy, excess skin. And you may not have been expecting to feel only “half-way there” after your weight loss.
But many people with excess skin after significant weight changes only feel they are HALF WAY to where they want their bodies to be. They struggle with the weight of the excess skin, or with chafing, discomfort and infections. Many also feel a sense of embarrassment or a fear of relationship intimacy due to having folds of excess, sagging skin.
Fortunately, body lift surgery to reduce the excess skin folds after significant weight change can really help.
Several of our Specialist Surgeons are Body Lift Surgery Experts for Abdominal Surgeries and Tummy Tucks, lower and upper Body Lifts, Arm Lifts (Brachioplasty), Thigh Lifts, Circumferential Abdominoplasty surgery and other body contouring & liposuction procedures.
Growing Skin Reduction (Body Lift) Surgery Requests following Post-Gastric Banding Surgery
Sadly, you can lose weight and excess fat, but you can’t exercise skin. And with the growing success of Bariatric Surgery for patients who were once obese (e.g., gastric sleeves), more people are presenting at our Specialist Surgery Clinics with the problem of residual excess skin.
They are seeking skin surgery to reduce the excess folds of skin and residual fat pockets that are hiding their normal body contours.
The upside of having a Body Lift surgery is that most people feel far less self-conscious about their bodies afterwards.
Leaning up including reducing excess skin folds – weight change and body lift surgery
What our Specialist Surgeons say about getting the best post-weight change body via Body Lift Surgeries
You can tone up your new body with exercise. But sadly, exercise won’t help you to revitalize or shrink your skin,” affirms Melbourne & Berwick Body Lift Specialist Surgeon Dr Geoff Barnett, who sees many post-weight loss patients for body surgery and excess skin removal procedures.
“It’s quite disheartening for many patients to do all the hard work of losing significant weight, only to be left with a body they still feel isn’t ‘normal.’ They tell me they don’t feel attractive because their normal feminine or masculine contours are hidden by the skin.”
Body Lift Specialist Dr Richard Maxwell, who sees patients in Williamstown & Hawthorn (Melbourne), agrees. “If you still have excess skin all over your body, it’s not just the socio-psychological impact of that, but it actually throws off your balance and leads to all kinds of infections and health compromises.”
The solution for loose, excess skin after weight loss are:
- Body Lift surgeries (singular, combined or in a specific sequence according to what bothers you the most or what procedure sequence will get you the best results
- Combined Body Lift and Body Contouring Surgeries using Liposuction
- Liposuction or Liposculpture – Body Contouring using other methods
For patients with no excess skin problems but residual fat, Liposuction and Liposculpture may be the best option – but if you have excess skin, you will likely need Body Lift Surgery by a fully-qualified Plastic Surgeon Specialist who operates in accredited Australian Hospitals.
So if you’re reading this page, you may be dismayed by the amount of droopy skin remaining on your body after you’ve lost a lot of kilos and have reached a stable weight.
You don’t have to live with the impact of excess droopy skin.
If your excess skin is impacting the health of your skin (e.g. recurring or treatment-resistant skin infections), causing you back pain and impeding your self-esteem, you can choose surgery to refine your contours. Speak with your GP about getting a referral to one of our Melbourne Surgeons.

In Melbourne, our Body Lift Skin Reduction Specialist Surgeons sometimes also operate as a team (typically a pair of Surgeons). Am I suitable candidate for Body Lift & Contouring Surgery?
Most surgeons will expect that you have been stable at your new weight for around 12 months before doing body lift surgery. Bodylift Surgery can be a series of large operations.
A great surgical result will require you to be healthy, well nourished and absolutely not smoking. If you are or were a smoker, you need to be a complete non-smoker for ideally 8 to 12 weeks. You’ll also need to be willing to work with a team of support specialists to get the best post-surgical healing results.
Body Lift recovery is a process; surgical aftercare is a critical part of healing
After the surgery, you will experience significant soreness, swelling and pain. You will be asked to wear compression garment to reduce swelling and bleeding. The recovery period will depend upon the number of procedures performed at once. You will be able to resume your activities in about 4-5 weeks.
It is critical that you take care during the recovery to avoid complications that are inherent with this operation on previously obese patients. You should assemble your own personal support team in order to minimise recovery time and potential for complications. Rest and low-stress during the recovery phase is essential, as is good nutrition and absolutely no smoking.
Bodylift is ideal for patients that have achieved a their desired weight goal and been the same weight for the last 12 months. Take charge of your new life and transform yourself with a bodylift.
If you have already done the work losing all that weight and are tired of hiding your unattractive skin under baggy clothing – maybe it’s time you came in for a consultation about a body lift.
