Mandatory Waiting Periods for Cosmetic Surgery or Plastic Surgery

How long do I need to wait between my consultation and plastic surgery theatre date?

Can I book surgery after a consultation?

  • You can make a full payment or a partial payment (deposit) to RESERVE/BOOK your preferred surgery date
    • if you have a certain date in mind and/or
    • are planning your surgery date and recovery time around your work, holidays/leave, childcare, studies or other commitments
    • the date is at least 7 days after your first consultation/consent
  • Read more on accepted payment methods here.
  • Read more on elective surgery waiting times in Australia.

Why are mandatory WAITING PERIODS before surgery GOOD for patients?

  • Gives you time to PLAN your surgery recovery period including
    • childcare
    • pet care
    • time off work
    • your at-home recovery environment (comfortable clothing, bedding, pillows, food stores and more)
  • Gives you adequate TIME to REVIEW all MATERIALS and CONSENTS you’ve been given, including healing times, surgery scars, recovery and risks.
  • Provides time to get a second opinion by a Plastic Surgeons where recommended.
  • Let’s you STOP TAKING certain SUPPLEMENTS or medications that might increase your surgery RISKS
    • ask your Plastic Surgeon for a list of products or medications you need to stop using just before your surgery
    • be honest with your Surgeon about substance use or prior surgery experiences
    • remember, SMOKING is a NO NO – if you smoke, you could incur serious problems during your surgery and recovery period
  • Allows you time to UNDERSTAND key differences between a cosmetic doctor (non-specialist) and a bonafide FRACS (Plas) Specialist Plastic Surgeon – remember, choose your Surgeon wisely.
  • Gives you time to organise pre-surgery imaging or tests and photographs required by your Surgeon and/or by Medicare (if a medically-indicated procedure with an MBS item number vs a cosmetic procedure) OR gives you time to apply for early release of Super if required.
  • Allows you to prepare emotionally for undertaking a surgery procedure and recovery times, which can be emotional.
  • They key to choosing between a recommended Surgeon is to DO adequate homework and research.
  • Look at BEFORE and AFTER cosmetic surgery photos, read the blogs and articles, and watch Plastic Surgery videos.
  • Don’t just rely on online reviews or health information online or on television – know the difference between a GP or skin doctor and a genuine FRACS qualified Plastic Surgeon (Specialist) so that you can have trust in your choice of Surgeon.
