You’ve had a few weeks off, your soul has recovered and your breasts are getting there, bandage free and nicely rounded, objects of fascination in the mirror.
Although you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the wire-free cotton bra, you are absolutely rearing to get back to work.
You love being at home, of course, but there’s only so much daytime TV one can watch and you haven’t seen the office crew in what feels like forever. So where do you start? Beyond emailing or calling your manager (if you’re not your own manager) and advising of your triumphant return, it’s time to get your back to work wardrobe sorted and set a date for return.
As you glide into the building, clutching a steaming latte, made-up and ready to knock them all off their spinning chairs, remember the following back to work tips to ensure the experience is eventful for all of the right reasons.
Continue to Eat Well
Your body is still healing, even if you’re ready to go another round with the world. Instead of grabbing an oily bite to eat between client meetings, take a packed lunch of crunchy vegetable or a nice salad, source a healthy takeaway (think sandwich bar) and continue to fuel your cells in their mission for your complete recovery. You’re probably not quite up to going back to the gym, so use this time to go for a walk; in fact, if you find a nice, fresh eatery a kilometre away, great, two birds with one stone.
Know Your Limits
Physical, mental and emotional, everybody is a bit vulnerable following surgery, Who are ‘their’ ? The patient? Doesn’t make sense? You may have to cope with pain and discomfort, internal pulling as your new breasts settle and the incisions heal, reduced movement and difficulty carrying large or heavy objects. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; if the shopping is too heavy, call on friends and family or have it delivered; if you tire easily and the thought of a full day of work makes your stomach clench with equal parts unease and excitement, start with a half day and slowly build up. Be honest about your limitations, particularly when trying to carry too much, as stressing a wound can stretch and break the sutures, resulting in more drama. Be gentle with your new breasts too, don’t wear normal bras until instructed, don’t go to the gym until cleared and minimise their exposure to the sun.
Establish a Routine
The best thing about staying home is sleeping in? Right? Maybe for a couple of days. But sleeping in, watching TV and snacking on carrot sticks, hummus and avocado everyday will eventually do your head in, causing depression and isolation. Get up at the same time, whether or not you’re still tired (nap later), this will help you sustain your natural bio-rhythms and adapt to your inevitable return to work phase. Don’t become a house hermit, go out, see friends, catch up with family, read a book in your favourite café, keep your mind active and social to ensure the transition from recovery to work is smooth and seamless.
